Tengbomhallen March 22 – April 12, 2025
Inger Bergström and Lotte Nilsson Välimaa continue their artistic collaboration here by once again conceptually and materially exploring a place. Truncated Icosahedron – Site V which is being shown here for the first time in Sweden, consists of a monumental “soft sculpture” in motion, an immersive sound work and a hidden video object.
When we enter the entrance to the Academy of Fine Arts, we are greeted by the Tengbomhallen in a changed form. A large spherical sculpture has entered the hall. Perhaps the object makes us sharpen our gaze – the scale of the room changes, gold and ochre-colored materials shimmer. The oscillation of the simple table fans causes the sculpture to slowly move back and forth – a brooding movement that seems to lead nowhere.
It is possible to perceive a sound that also seems to move in the room. Sometimes completely abstract, sometimes it emerges with a clear readability. Through a playful documentary depiction, the rhythm and pulse of urban environments are captured in a four-channel sound work.
In the work on the project Truncated Icosahedron artists have drawn attention to the wondrous world of geometry. Archimedean solids are a collective name in geometry for convex, three-dimensional polyhedra. These polyhedra can be seen as ingenious sculptural methods for creating spherical bodies from two-dimensional surfaces. The sculptural object Truncated Icosahedron is built according to this principle – here using a patchwork of cut pieces of fabric that, when assembled correctly, form an absolutely spherical shell. Installations have previously been presented at Fiberspace Gallery, Stockholm (2018), SOFT Gallery, Oslo (2021) and Galleri Hanaholmen, Finland (2021). A film session was held at Hallwylska Muséet, Stockholm (2020).
