“Before there was any land or sea, any sky above, our whole world appeared everywhere uniform, a mass, formless, confused, and raw. The mass has been called Chaos.”
Ovid's Metamorphoses
Before names, matter was confused, indefinite and confused – did not know what it wanted to be or how it would behave. The gods regulated this – gave all materials special properties and distinguished the elements from each other. The artist destroyed this – carved animals from wood and people from clay. Dead materials were represented as living beings with blood and chlorophyll in their veins.
I work in parallel with chainsaw sculptures in wood and 3D printing, as well as with pencil and charcoal drawings and rendered digital images. The contrast between grumpy pine, dirty charcoal and digital reality raises questions about what these new technologies do to our perception.
“Is the world actually different or are we just getting new glasses?”
