“Modern architecture often has stylistic forms without meaning. Be critical of them. Not a form, not a method of execution without meaning, a reason. Always ask why” Gunnar Asplund introduces a lecture.
Gunnar Asplund only lived to be 55 years old, but during his short life he managed to create some of our country's most famous buildings from modern times. He has been a role model for architects in the Nordic countries and internationally. His architecture stands for timeless values that have inspired generations and is therefore as interesting today as when it was created.
The period commonly known as “Swedish Grace” (1910–1930) was a golden age in Swedish architecture and design. Gunnar Asplund was at the forefront of developments and thus also laid the foundation for his own life’s work. He brought with him experiences from older traditions when he designed houses for the needs and conditions of modern times. The facade was not the most important thing, but rather the interior spaces and fundamental values in architecture such as light, scale, proportions, the connections between the room, the house and the surroundings.
The exhibition is being held in connection with the publication of member Eva Eriksson's book Gunnar Asplund. Architect in the mining era 1909–1931, published by Appell förlag in collaboration with ArkDes. The exhibition highlights Gunnar Asplund as an inspiring visionary architect.
