The starting point for Elina Birkehag's work is a fascination with the Latin alphabet – especially the letter A, whose origin is believed to lie in a stylized depiction of an ox's head. At the same time, her work connects to the Scandinavian fäbod tradition, where young women spent summers alone with cows in the forest, creating close bonds with the animals.
As part of the one-year Bernadotte Fellowship, Birkehag has studied archival images of women and cows while also spending time with the animals herself. Her work asks how communication between humans and cows might be possible. Through the storytelling method of shadow play, she traces and translates these encounters - shaping what could be read as an alternative alphabet.
Elina Birkehag was awarded a scholarship within the Bernadotte Program 2024 because she tackles a topical theme of our time with great openness and a desire to experiment and opens up the form for how an artistic investigation can be carried out. The exhibition is part of the scholarship.
